Prom helps student boost self-esteem
By Amber S
I attended my senior prom in April 2013. It was the very first prom I had gone to and didn't know what to expect. All my life I've been self-conscious and hated my body. I've been overweight practically all of my life and it has stopped me from doing a lot of the things I've wanted to do, including dance, theater, sports, music and even going to school dances.
I never wanted to be the center of attention and I have always done everything I could to avoid it. I dress in black because I heard it makes you look skinnier, opted out of most things and refused to communicate with people unless necessary. In 2011 I started my cosmetology class. I had the best teacher and best classmates in the entire world. The 13 of us grew to be family. They brought me out of my shell and I started to become a happier person. They accepted me for who I was and boosted my self-esteem so much.
The second semester of my senior year was a little rocky. It was my first semester without them, but I continued to be the same person I was when I was with them. I decided to attend my senior prom after being convinced by many of my friends. It was my first social outing and it was great! I finally felt beautiful for once in my life. I wore a curve-hugging dress (not black!) and my extensions (Pro Extensions). It was absolutely the best experience I've ever had in my life. The only regret I have is not having any pictures! I was running late, it was raining and my battery was dead (go figure). But I still wouldn't change anything.
