We’d all love to have a closet full of the latest designer clothes, complete with a new and stylish outfit to wear each day. Sadly, unlike A-list celebrities, many of us are on a budget that does not include such luxuries.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a stylish and functional wardrobe. You just have to have a few versatile pieces and the creativity to mix and match.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, a woman needs just a few basic staples in her closet to dress appropriately for any occasion.

In terms of footwear, the classic ballet flat is a must-have. Not only does it look great with skinny jeans, but a neutral color, like black, can be paired with many dresses, skirts and leggings. The black patent leather ballet flats below can be found at Payless for $16.99.

A white silk blouse or other neutral top is also essential. It can be worn under a chic blazer, tucked into a pencil skirt, or paired with jeans to achieve a more casual look. This white silk blouse with ruffles from Neiman Marcus was on sale for $80.

And what woman doesn’t own a little black dress? Both timeless and elegant, a simple black dress can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion and the desired accessories. Whether it’s cocktails at a nice restaurant, or an awards banquet, the little black dress is the perfect fit. This black dress by Calvin Klein is $99 at Dillard’s.

A pair of dark-wash jeans is also a crucial garment. Darker jeans tend to be more slimming if they fit well. These jeans are also suitable for everyday casual wear, but can be glamourized with the simple addition of a blazer, a dressy blouse and a few bangles for a touch of sparkle. These boot-cut Levi jeans can be purchased for $45.

When it comes to accessories and outerwear, an understated handbag in a muted color can prove to be useful, as is a trench coat. This Trenchcoat from Burlington Coat Factory retails for $79.99. The black sparkle purse can be purchased from Blue Velvet Vintage for $25.99.

A black, tailored blazer is also a good investment. Whether it’s worn with jeans, as a dress cover-up, or with a pencil skirt or suit pants, a blazer’s functionality is limitless. The tailored fit will flatter your curves and provide needed texture and visual appeal. This Worthington blazer from JCPenny sells for $35.
