Summertime can be brutal on your hair. Whether it’s increased sun exposure, salty beach waves or chlorinated pools, summer’s fun activities can have a negative effect on your hair’s health and appearance.
And if you wear clip-in hair extensions on a regular basis, you need to take precautions to protect them during the summertime too! For example, if you plan to go to the pool, it’s better to take your extensions out before swimming as overexposure to chlorine can shorten the lifespan of the extensions and cause split ends and breakage.
Blondes and those with lighter-colored hair should be especially cautious when swimming in chlorine. After all, no one wants to end summer with a headful of green hair!
According to an article by Model Beauty Secrets, the best way to protect your hair from chlorine damage is to wet your hair before entering the pool. Once you are done swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly, and wash and rinse with shampoo and conditioner if possible.
If you do wind up with greenish-colored hair, many hair salons and spas offer Malibu treatments, which help remove excess buildup caused by swimming pools.
Elizabeth Chaplin, an eHow contributor, said that those getting a Malibu treatment should plan to be at the salon for at least 40 minutes, but processing times vary depending on an individual’s hair.
Increased time outside can also have a negative effect on hair as it is exposed to more sunlight. In fact, natural oils can start to deplete and hair can become more dry and brittle as it is continuously exposed to outside elements. An InStyle article recommends letting your hair air-dry during the summer months to help retain moisture.
To help protect your hair from harmful UV rays, try using leave-in hair products that also have built-in sunscreens.
